  • What to Do If You Think You're Being Followed?

Being pursued can be a terrifying experience. Don’t be caught unprepared. Here’s what to do if someone is following you.

It could happen to anyone: you’re out at night walking by yourself, either home, to your car, or even to meet some friends. You don’t have far to go and you’re always alert, so you assume that you’ll be fine. But then, out of the corner of your eye, you see someone, and they seem to be walking quickly toward you. Are they going to attack you? Suddenly, that short walk seems like miles.

The first thing to do when you think someone is following you is to confirm that you are being targeted. When walking down the street, don’t take a standard path. Cross the street, take three right turns, or speed up — anything that a standard pedestrian wouldn’t copy — and see what this person does. If they match your movements, then they are pursuing you.

Once you have confirmed that you are being followed, figure out your situation. If you can get out of harm’s way by ducking into a store or crowded place, do so immediately. Otherwise, take action. You can do this a number of ways. The easiest option for timid or scared individuals is to lock eyes with the pursuer. Oftentimes, attackers plan on the element of surprise — if they know that they have been seen, it is possible that they will stop or try to find someone else to pursue. If this does not work, get vocal. Yell at your potential attacker to go away, or scream “fire.” Calling out for an emergency is a guaranteed way to attract attention from anyone nearby. With more eyes on the follower, they are less likely to attack you.

If there is no one around, don't stop yelling, and run away. Whatever you do, do not run home. If you are being followed, you do not want to let someone know where you live. Run to a public place or a police station. If you have a cell phone, call 9-1-1 for emergency assistance. Let as many people as possible know that you are in danger.

If you are unable to run away, or you are forced to confront your attacker, there is still the option of using a nonlethal weapon. Pepper spray, for instance, is legal in all 50 states and is a convenient option for personal safety. As the most common type of defense spray, it is affordable, lightweight, and easy to carry in a purse, in a pocket, or on a keychain. With Revere Security, you can search for pepper sprays in different sizes and colors, and can even check out stylish holsters. If someone follows you or gets too close for comfort, pepper spray will stop the attacker with burning pain and constricted airways, giving you the opportunity to get to safety.

  • Surviving a Bear Attack.

"Fatal black bear attacks on people are extremely rare. There are 700,000 to 900,000 black bears living in North America, and in recent years, they’ve killed an average of two people a year. And despite popular perception, most black bears that kill people aren’t mothers protecting their cubs, but adult males hunting in stealth. A 2011 study of bear deaths from 1900 to 2009 showed that male bears committed 92 percent of the attacks. More than 80 percent of those attacks were predatory—in other words, a bear trying to make a human into a meal. JOE AZOUGAR almost became one of these deaths when a 316-pound male black bear locked onto him as prey at his cabin in Ontario. This is his story."
